My life has been defined by “obsessive sprint periods” where I chase the depths of a niche, cramming everything I can into a condensed window. This happens when I'm fully inspired and generally represents how I learn and grow.
Violent moves into long boring consolidation periods, otherwise known as sprint when inspired, rest, repeat.
I believe this is a personality type that defines the underbelly of my entire life.
This is who I am: obsessive and really fucking bored.
The culmination of these moments is what ‘threadguy’ is to you.
The recent, longest endeavor has been content. It started with Twitter spaces, evolved into an irl podcast and eventually peaked with live streaming.
I wouldn’t say I “love” content. I do love learning new things and talking to people smarter than me. Content is an excuse to do that all day long. I also found a focused, interesting conversation is one of the few places I can truly tap into flow state on command. Some of the best moments of my life came from this.
However at no point in the last four years did I believe content is my life's mission. I just thought I was good at it, where most aren’t, and it can get me closer to my goals. Whatever they are or evolve into, they’re easier to reach with a platform. That’s just life on the internet.
I came into crypto on an obsessive sprint; NBA Top Shot. Coming from sports card flipping, and years of making money on the internet in weird ways, this was by all metrics the ‘coolest’ (and most lucrative) way to be profitable online. I was obsessed for months (and printing), until Top Shot died, I wasn’t anymore and I left crypto for a while.
I’ve done this many times now. NFTs, friendtech, farcaster, NFTs again, fantasy top, ordinals, memecoins, AI, content, etc. It usually plays out similarly.
Obsession -> rapid growth -> burnout -> leave with more than I started with.
Back to content, specifically streaming. I’m done for a little while. I might be back, I probably will, but I honestly don’t know. To be honest I WAS pretty scared that I didn’t know.
This past month has been my first time off Twitter for more than 48 hours since creating threadguy. I felt lost. But I'm used to that feeling. Now it’s evolved into genuine excitement, edging to whatever is next.
It really has nothing to do with being “forced out.” If anything it was a blessing in disguise. I looked like shit, felt like shit, was going through the motions, and didn’t have the passion to take it as seriously as I like to do things. Everyone could feel it. The burnout period finally hit.
The break was coming whether forcefully or not.
I can only speak for myself and how my brain is wired. I need to fuel these periods. And listen when they tell me no. They can never be forced. Only guided. When I feel it, go all in with no regard for repercussions. Whatever happens, happens, with gratitude. When I don’t, relax, take it slow, and don’t beat myself up.
I believe all of my obsessive sprints get me one 1% closer to my purpose or true passion each time. I truly don’t think I've found “it” yet, but I'm a little closer than I was last sprint. It involves markets, it involves social and it’s in crypto or crypto adjacent.
Nothing I've experienced stimulates my brain the way this place does. I’ve never believed in the future of anything like crypto. And the people are (mostly) awesome.
Everyone that leaves crypto for a couple months always comes back to say “wow guys haha you have no idea how bad this place fucking sucks from the outside looking in.” I always thought they were retarded. Until I did it, for a couple weeks and had a moment of “maybe they’re right.”
I fantasized about leaving for a little while until I realized there is literally nowhere else to go. And even if there was, why would I want to?
It’s impossible to experience what we live in this space daily and then go back to a normal life. There is no normal life.
There is only internet markets.
You are stuck here.
With mental illness.
Forever.
At least we’re together. Right?
Anyways, right now I don’t feel it, maybe for the better. Soon I will, like I always do. It’s coded in my DNA.
In the meantime i’ll post on Twitter, try the new things, trade, buy some new outfits and maybe get a gym membership.
love you.
