An L1 for application-specific chains
Nick White introduces Celestia as a modular L1 designed for a future in which applications are vertically integrated, app-specific chains rather than smart contracts sharing a general-purpose L1. His shorthand is blockspace as Web3 bandwidth. That means changing the mental model of an application: a rollup becomes something closer to a standalone virtual server. He points to Ethena and Securitize's Converge, with $1 billion in committed TVL, Towns' decentralized-Discord-style communities, and Plume as early examples.
The exchange case for modularity
The product category he expects Threadguy's audience to recognize is exchanges. Hyperliquid proved that an onchain exchange can approach centralized-exchange functionality, White says, but general-purpose chains lack the throughput and latency to compete directly. In his model, an exchange rollup can run a single, colocated sequencer for roughly five-millisecond latency while posting its data to Celestia. The combination aims to preserve a non-custodial, decentralized back end without giving up trading performance.
Privacy without abandoning verification
White uses Hibachi to explain a second exchange constraint: public orders can expose a whale's identity, leverage, and likely liquidation level. Celestia collaborated with the venue on private data availability, so encrypted orders remain verifiable onchain but are not visible to the entire market. The rollup operator can still see activity, making the design more like a centralized exchange than a fully private system. White says fully hiding information from even the operator is not yet practical because proving is too slow and expensive.
Why the market turned hostile
Asked about Celestia's negative Crypto Twitter reception, White describes a classic hype cycle: inflated expectations after the 2023 launch, followed by disillusionment when a paradigm shift did not arrive instantly. Shipping the vision requires other pieces to come together, he says, and infrastructure has a longer time horizon than traders often want. He also distances the protocol from the popular airdrop thesis, saying it came from Cosmos-era expectations rather than Celestia's intent and that airdrops have broadly proved less effective.
A bandwidth business, like cloud computing
White's economic analogy is AWS or Azure. Cloud providers charge applications for consumed compute; Celestia charges chains for consumed blockspace. He maps Ethereum to dial-up, Solana to broadband, and Celestia's aspiration to fiber—orders of magnitude more throughput by focusing on raw blockspace. If finance and trading increasingly move onchain, demand for that bandwidth grows and fees accrue to the protocol. He calls it a long-term, at-scale business rather than a near-term consumer app.
The application layer still matters
White does not think value should accrue exclusively to L1s. Netflix can be valuable while paying AWS, he says; likewise, applications should retain their own fees and MEV because they own the user relationship. Celestia's role is to become the best infrastructure provider at scale. His closing correction is that “data availability layer” makes Celestia sound like minor middleware: he wants it understood as an L1 seeking to be Web3's security and bandwidth layer. He flags locked staking rewards through Lotus, a Q3 block-size upgrade, exchanges, and Converge as coming catalysts.
